Indoor fishing
Students in groups construct a ‘fishing stick’ and ‘go fishing’ in the containers. Groups would be made aware of the number of fish types in each container. Each group must retrieve 10 fish from their container. Discussion prior to fishing would focus on chance language: Which fish might you catch the most of? Why? Would you be unlikely to catch any type of fish? Why? What chance do you have of catching a shark? Why?
Once groups have caught their 10 fish, class discussion would focus on the outcomes of their ‘fishing expedition’ (refer previous questions). This would lead to a discussion about:
- How you would group your fish types
- How many more of one kind of fish does your group have compared to another fish type
- Comparisons between groups
- The notion of ‘tallying’
- Ways in which you could represent how many fish types you have that would possibly make the process of ‘making comparisons’ easier

Interactive Whiteboard (IWB) – ‘Tallying’ activity
The following Notebook activity can be located on the Resources page under Day 2. It can be used to assist in modeling ‘tallying’.
Move the fish you’ve caught from ‘your fishing spot’ into ‘your catch’.
Tally the fish in ‘your catch’ – record this in the ‘Tally’ table.
‘Tallying’ your catch (in groups)
Students (in groups) tally their catch from the ‘Indoor Fishing’ activity. The work sheet for this activity (refer image below) can be retrieved from Resources.
